Now I know everyone is happy about the new medical marijuana laws that are being passed and the Feds standing down on individual states that have passed laws or decriminalized it. It is about time the government stood down on their incredibly wasteful "war on drugs". BUT.... why does it have to be for medical purposes?? I mean is alcohol a prescription based drug..??
I grew up in Alaska and except for a short time in the 90s it was legal for anyone to grow and smoke (just not in public). We can, to this day have up to 24 plants in various stages of growth and have an OZ in our house with no prescription. We do not have a lot of crime in Anchorage... we do not have ANY marijuana crimes (other than growers going over the limit of 24 plants because of the demand).
I am all for any type of legalization and I think a lot of people are... but that is where they get us. We have been fighting this battle for so long that we really want to take what we can get at this point... but is it the right thing..?? I mean why should I have to go to a doctor and get a prescription for a plant..??? They don't demand prescriptions for coffee or tobacco do they...??
Here in Alaska if I got a prescription for marijuana... my rights would actually diminish.. example.. a prescription marijuana user is only allowed 5 plants in various stages of growth and 1 OZ in the house. So I am not doing myself any favors by getting a prescription, and there are no dispensaries in Alaska yet... and won't be for awhile.
Basically what I am saying is::
The government has marijuana classified as a class 1 drug.. right there with heroin, LSD and cocaine. THAT is where the problem lies... IF marijuana was reclassified in its proper category (with coffee and tobacco) then it would not be an issue.
This is also where the problem lies as far as future research into the benefits of marijuana use. Scientists have to have the FDA's permission to research Class 1 drugs (and it is almost impossible to get their permission to research ANY Class 1 drug). So reclassifying marijuana would free up companies to research marijuana whenever and however they wanted. Farmers could grow it for hemp or recreational purposes where ever they wanted... etc...
I am not trying to burst any bubbles here.. I am just trying to get people to think about it from a different angle and not get all wrapped up in the fact that somewhere in America someone can smoke marijuana and not get arrested... LOL
I see these new medical marijuana laws as the governments way of letting us have "something" while maintaining full control of marijuana for recreational use, agricultural use and any kind of research.
My point...
As long as Marijuana remains a Class 1 drug... we will not be able to utilize marijuana to it's full potential and THAT is what it is all about... not just getting HIGH Legally, but having the freedom to research, develop and utilize a plant that has only had a small portion of it's benefits discovered, and to reclassify a substance that we KNOW is in the wrong class and should be made available to anyone.
Just my two cents....
Keep On Smokin!
