while i was away on vacation, i heard a story on the news about Amsterdam no longer allowing tourists to visit their cannabis cafes, turning them into private clubs open only to local members.. i haven't had a chance to really look into this, and don't have all the info, but it seems that the Dutch government proposed this earlier in 2011, and has actually gone ahead with it.

personally, i don't know or understand their reason(s) for such a change. i'm guessing this new policy will reflect largely on tourism and all the money it brings to the local economy.

looking forward to seeing how this will play out..
I saw this last year when they first started talking about closing the cafes to tourists.

There were a couple of cities close to the borders that said they would lose substantial revenues as they saw 20 to 30 thousand tourists every weekend.

It must be nice to have so much money that you can close a major revenue stream without concern.
i read a CNN article from June 2011 that says this is a push by the Dutch government to "crack down on drug trafficking near the borders with Germany and Belgium." it also states that "The city of Amsterdam, including its mayor, has vowed to fight the measure." (full article here)

i wonder how this will affect the Cannabis Cup..
High Times covered this when it was first proposed. As I understood the proposal at that time it would no longer be legal for foreigners to partake of the herb. I no longer subscribe to HT so I do not know what the coverage might be at this time.

If it is not legal for me to partake I see no reason to go back to the Cannabis Cup events. I have been to several and it was always a fun and informative event. (from what I am able to remember) Cool
